BRO to fence portion of 1,700km Myanmar border

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) is undertaking a fencing project along the India-Myanmar border, similar to the India-Bangladesh border. A 10-km stretch in Manipur has already been covered, and the ministry of home affairs has identified around 1,700 km of fencing that needs to be done.

Elusive Binturong, small clawed otter added to Kaziranga's mammalian species list

Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve (KNPTR) in Assam revealed two new mammalian species, the Binturong and the small-clawed otter. The Binturong, the largest civet in India, was spotted during a migratory bird count. The small-clawed otter was discovered after a training program. The park now hosts 37 mammalian species, enriching its biodiversity.

Leader of banned CPI (Maoist) arrested in Assam

Drinking water supply to be hit for 2 days in Guwahati

The Guwahati Municipal Development Authority (GMDA) will carry out restoration work at the intake point of the Panbazar water treatment plant, causing a two-day disruption in drinking water supply to 16 localities. The GMDA informed the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) about the restoration works near the treatment plant, resulting in the temporary suspension of water supply. The GMC assured that there is no problem in continuing the supply and it will be resumed on January 12. The inconvenience caused to customers is regretted by the GMC.

After 40 years, rhinos return to sanctuaries in Assam

After 40 years, rhinos have returned to stay at Laokhowa and Burachapori wildlife sanctuaries of greater Kaziranga, Assam, following a massive eviction through which 1,282 hectares of forest and government land were cleared of illegal settlements last year. Until 1983, Laokhowa-Burachapori in Nagaon district had 45-50 rhinos. While poachers killed a few, the surviving rhinos left for Orang National Park on the north bank of the Brahmaputra following encroachment and human settlements over the last several decades.

In touch with Ulfa's Baruah but talks unlikely soon: Himanta

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed Monday that he is in direct touch with Ulfa (Independent) chief Paresh Baruah but made it clear that negotiations with his outfit are unlikely soon. "I usually talk to him every three or six months. I plan to speak to him again in the next six to seven days. No chief minister had talked to him earlier," Sarma said, days after he chaperoned efforts for Ulfa's pro-talks faction to sign an accord with the Centre. Gunmen posing as cops kill 4 in Manipur; 6 hurt
