The Angami Gazetted Officers Krotho (AGOK) held its annual conference on November 26 at the AGOK Badze Meriema with Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio as the Guest Speaker.

Speaking on a broader perspective beyond the Angami community, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio urged organizations like the AGOK to put efforts in initiating unity and progress to the Nagas while addressing the challenges that Naga society face today. Rio expressed apprehension over the growing disunity and division where both the Naga nationalists underground as well as political leaders overground are in division and disunity.

“We are living in a time of division and disunity. We are only pursuing personal and individual interests and not the interest of the public. We put self-interest above our people’s interest,” said Rio who pointed out that the divisions are seen in the public organizations such as the Naga Hoho, mothers’ group and even students’ groups. Despite efforts, Rio was of the view that Naga people are not able to united.

Rio also rued, “Even churches have not initiated social reformation. When we unite, we achieve beyond what we desire.”

A major challenge in Naga society, according to Rio, is that “there are too many people who wants to lead and teach but very few who acts and serves. The ones who serve are very few but there are too many who wants to lead and order.””There is also a growing frustration and negativity among Nagas. Today’s generation expect everything to be delivered by the government or by one’s parents. The society will grow weaker with such attitude,” said Rio.

Further the negative and wrong perceptions that outsiders have of Naga society was pointed out by Rio where he urged the gathering to put efforts to change those perception.

The biggest challenge, when initiating development works by the government is that of land ownership, stated Rio. Citing the example of the four lane road construction, Rio stated that the assurance for the four lane construction of road from Dimapur to Kohima was given by the then Prime Minister of India Atal Bihari Vajpayee during his visit in 2003. Rio, however stated that it took ten years for land acquisition and land compensation to be completed, while also adding that some issues still remain.

Groups like AGOK are in a respectable and leveraging position, there Rio maintained that the unity of such groups are needed for the progress of our society. “My desire is that just as you are working cohesively to initiate development in your group, even if you cannot change the whole of Naga society, I hope that you will also help enable change and progress for our community,” stated Rio.

Rio appealed the AGOK members to make the capital city a more livable and enjoyable place for both citizens and visitors.

Acknowledging the plans and visions of the pioneers of AGOK and the present leaders, Rio noted that their contributions and works will impact the posterity of Naga society.

Rio also assured of his best contribution for the completion of the multi-utility centre at Meriema.

In his presidential address, Dr. Kedozeto Punyü, President, AGOK shared the activities and projects of the AGOK as well as the history on the formation of AGOK. The AGOK was formed in 1983 under the motto ‘U Themia Dzevi’ (For our people’s welfare) with Late KK Angami as its first President. Some of the important projects taken up by the AGOK are the AGOK Badze Multi-utility Centre at Meriema and the Nehemiah Project at Tenyiphe, Chümoukedima which will cater to accommodation and hospitality services for the community.
