The Tsütuonuomia Khel Day was celebrated on October 25 at Mission Compound, Kohima with Dr. Neiphi Kire, Chairman, Kohima Village Council as the special guest. The Tsütuonuomia Khel is one among the four Khels of Kohima village. The commemoration will be the 39th celebration which is observed once in three years.

Thepfuvilie Suohu, Chairman, T. Khel Council who delivered the welcome speech mentioned that the T. Khel Day is observed to ensure better relationships among its members. A significant feature of the day is the presence of its female members married outside the clan/khel who are the special invitees for the Day besides the inclusion of other communities and khels with close affinity with the community.

Exhorting the gathering, Pelevituo Solo, Advisor, T Khel Council urged the community for progressive growth. “Species which are not able to adapt and adjust to changes perishes and become extinct while species which are able to adapt themselves to changes survives. Likewise we must learn to adapt to the many changes taking place in our time,” said Solo.

Solo viewed that Nagas have still not reached the stage of being able to adapt with the modern system which is evident in the general tendency of breaking rules and regulations in any given set up. The violations of such rules have often led to inequalities in the Naga society.

“We cannot call ourselves as civilized community and people if we cannot adapt and adjust to the modern system,” Solo pointing out that the ‘backwardness’ of Nagas is best manifested in the way we dress and the contrast in the performance of our work and services.

Solo viewed that Nagas have not progressed because of the lackadaisical attitude of the people and government. “We do not perform our work wholeheartedly,” said Solo critiquing the lack of work culture among young Nagas. With the influence of foreign cultures on young Nagas, Solo urged that one must emulate the good practices and values of other cultures. While adapting to changes, Solo was of the view the certain irrelevant customs and traditions can be phased out but at the same time values and ethos must be preserved and safeguarded. “We lose our unique identity when we no longer value our ethos and culture,” stated Solo who emphasised that one’s local language is an important aspect of any culture.

Meanwhile, special guest Dr. Neiphi Kire acknowledged the contributions of the T.Khel in Nagaland especially the capital, as well as the contributions of its members in the Naga movement which gave an identiy to the Nagas.

Considering Knowledge as a powerful tool, Kire noted that through the pursuit of knowledge and education, Kohima village and its units have learned to live peacefully and in harmony with each other.

“Before the advent of Christianity and modern education, disputes occurred among khels and villages over land, cattle, etc but through education there has been a decrease in disputes. Once education reached us, disputes have also decreased. Where does our strength lies? It is in our unity,” stated Kire adding that pursue of education and knowledge has also enabled the Nagas to excel in other fields such as Sports.

“There is a saying in the West that the maturity of a nation is known by the hospitality it extends, likewise, the Kohima village including the T.Khel have been accommodative and hospitable,” said Kire reminding that the village have sacrificed its best lands for the development and progress of the Capital. However, Kire also reminded the gathering to relearn and introspect on the rapid changes happening in the current times. “We must begin to think and work for posterity,” stated Kire.
