Covid crisis may push half of Assam population into poverty, says study

An Assam government-sponsored study to assess and understand the severity of the Covid-19 pandemic on the state’s economy has predicted that nearly half of the state’s population may be pushed into poverty if the present crisis pushes up the state’s unemployment rate of 8% by more than two folds. According to NSSO estimate (2011-12), poverty head count ratio in the state stands at 32%.
