ATMA Wokha celebrates Women Farmers Day

Wokha, December 2 (MExN): The Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA) Wokha celebrated the Women Farmer’s Day on October 15 at D.C Conference hall Wokha. Chairing the occasion deputy project director Yanglen Y Jami welcomed the women farmers by exhorting and highlighting the various schemes and activities of women in farming. T Subenthung Yanthan, deputy project director then explained the importance and concept of the women farmer’s day by encouraging the women folks to continuously put more efforts and that their hard works will not go in vain but will be acknowledged and recognised by the government.

 

He asserted that a woman comprises 43% of the world agricultural labour force, which rises to 70% in some countries and that there is not a single area of agriculture in which women are not involved. Women play important role from sowing to harvesting to post harvest management to marketing and further contribute to food security. Asali Murry a progressive farmer shared her success story and farming experiences of the past 20 years and encouraged the women groups to work hard with zeal and determination.

 

Two SHGs namely sunflower SHG and Eyingro SHG from chukitong and wokha block presented their status report and their various farming activities. Later power point presentation on women in agriculture was delivered by Lothungbeni Murry Assistant Technology Manager, she discussed about the significant inequality of women on farms even when they are as good as men in farming and lamented that if women were given equal access to resources as men agricultural yield could further increase.

 

In another session, formation and functions of SHGs/FIGs was discussed by Zachamo Humtsoe (ATM) who emphasised on the regular meeting of the women groups and also discussed about the maintenance and proper book keeping. Short video on innovative women farming by Asali Murry was shown. The program ended with vote of thanks by Elilo Kikon (ATM).
