Dimapur, December 2 (MExN): ATMA Dimapur Kuhuboto Block conducted demonstratioon “Azolla Cultivation” and “Nursery bed preparation of cabbage” at Zukihe Village on November 26. The resource persons were Mlato Swu, ATM (ATMA) Kuhuboto Block and Ameto Yeptho, ATM (ATMA) Kuhuboto Block, Dimapur.
Mlato gave a brief introduction on the importance of azolla cultivation and described azolla as a free floating water fern mostly utilized as bio -fertilizer for wetland paddy and a kind of green fodder grown on water surface. He explained that it can be grown easily in wild environment and even can be grown under environment like polyhouse and greenhouse. It can be grown in large quantities and used as green manure in both kharif and rabi seasons. He informed that azolla can fix atmospheric Co2 and nitrogen to form carbohydrates and ammonia respectively.
Ameto spoke on the importance of nursery and emphasized on the selection of site, selection of soil, types of nursery bed either flat bed or raised bed. The program concluded with a live demonstration on preparation of raised nursery bed shown to the members by explaining the details of the advantages of growing seedlings on raised beds, line sowing in the nursery bed, practice of mulching, watering, thinning and days for transplanting. The participating farmers were also given winter vegetable seeds.
