After having one of the highest infant mortality rates (IMR) in the country for several decades, the figures have finally dipped to a new low in Assam, sliding below the national average for the first time. This was revealed by the National Family Health Survey-5 (NFHS-5) for 2019-21, which was carried out in two phases from 2019 and spilled over to the current year owing to the pandemic.
