ECI likely to announce schedule of Lok Sabha polls shortly

Abhijit Sinha, Chief Electoral Officer, Nagaland, today said the Election Commission of India (ECI) is likely to announce the schedule of the parliamentary elections in a few days time.


Sinha said this during a State level awareness workshop on EVM/VVPAT, media certification and monitoring committee and media matters with media persons from both print and electronic in view of the upcoming general elections to Lok Sabha elections 2019.


He said this media workshop is being conducted as there are some fresh instructions/changes from ECI and the media has to be updated in conformity with the commission’s guidelines.


For Lok Sabha polls in Nagaland, he said, the Commissioner Nagaland will be the Returning Officer (RO).


Sara S. Jamir, joint secretary Power and NLMT talked on paid news/fake news/media and MCMC while R. Mhathung, assistant chief electoral officer & NLMT demonstrated EVM/VVPAT administrative procedures and hands on. Touching on EVM/VVPAT, Sinha said that EVMs were first used during the 1982 elections in Kerala.


The first official use of Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trial (VVPAT) in the country was in Noksen Assembly Constituency under Tuensang District of Nagaland during 2013.


In view of the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls, CEO Nagaland has been conducting series of activities to ensure successful conduct of the polls.


Tokheho Yephomi is the current Lok Sabha member from Nagaland. Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio on February 26 told the Nagaland State Assembly session that there are 12,09,613 voters in Nagaland as per final published E-Roll 2019. Out of this, 6,13,409 are male while 5, 96, 204 are female voters.
