Shehri Samridhi Utsav (Street Food festival and job mela) construed as ‘Urban Prosperity Festival’ was launched in Nagaland today along with the rest of the country under the aegis of State Urban Development Agency (SUDA) urban development department Nagaland in collaboration with Food Safety, Nagaland under Health & Family Welfare and Kohima Municipal Council.


Being held under the aegis of Ministry of Housing and City Affairs, the festival will target on city livelihoods and extending the outreach of National City Livelihoods Mission (Day-NULM) to the poorest of the inadequate and the most susceptible, and aid obtain of SHG members to the other governing administration techniques.


It will go till February 15.
Minister for Urban Development & Municipal Affairs Metsubo Jamir formally launched the festival here at the Directorate of Urban Development.


Addressing the inaugural function, Jamir called upon the women, especially housewives in urban areas to invest their time productively by engaging themselves into income generating activities during free time. The Minister said that one can take up part time job by selling vegetables or other goods through house to house in their respective wards.


He maintained that once the income generating activities is properly operationalized, our towns will sustain and prosperity will come. He said that ‘urban and rural’ are complementary to each other and stated that urban prosperity actually depends on rural prosperity. He said requirements in urban areas are mostly provided by the people domiciled in rural areas for which, he strongly emphasized the importance of having proper markets in towns for the people of rural areas to sell their products.


He termed the cycle of our economy as “urban people as consumers and rural people as producers” as such providing marketing facilities for the rural dwellers is an important aspect of our economy, he added.


He also stressed on the importance of forming SHGs in every ward or colony as they represent the people who can assist the government and community when it comes to maintenance and protection of public assets and disposal of wastes.


He urged the people particularly in rural areas to change their mentality and make the best use of their free time and contribute for community development stating that co-existence is very important in urban areas towards prosperity.


Appreciating the launching of the programme, Rural Development Advisor Dr. Neikiesalie (Nicky) Kire said that the scheme should percolate down even to the extent of wards and colonies so as to get maximum benefit from it especially by poor and downtrodden urban dwellers to earn their livelihood.


He suggested the opening of bazaar in every wards of Kohima town for easy accessibility of the goods and also to avoid traffic jam.


Urban development department principal secretary Abhishek Singh, while highlighting about the functions and aims of the department said that the prime focus is to provide basic amenities and urban facilities access, extending outreach to poorest of the poor.


He also pointed out the issues of the SHGs as well as the problems faced by the street vendor categories which we often tend to ignore.


He briefed about the various schemes, programmes and loans provided at a subsidized rate for self-employment ventures and establishing shelter for the homeless by enhancing sustainable livelihood opportunities offered by the Urban Development department.


He also urged the Municipal Council to facilitate the recognized street vendors and provide identity cards to the identified families and give designated places and timings for their venture.


State Mission Director (NULM) S. Takatuba Aier delivered welcome address while Secretary, UDD & Chairman SUDA, S. Nyanbemo Tsanglao chaired the programme.


The inaugural function was followed by workshop with resource persons from Food Safety (Health & Family Welfare), AYUSH (Health & Family Welfare) and Urban Development (SUDA) and touched on “Eat safe, eat healthy, eat fortified,” profile of good health and poverty alleviation programme respectively.


Job mela was conducted by IIJT, Kohima, AICSM, Wokha and Zynorics Initiative, Kohima.


Meanwhile, street food mela will be held across the state from February 4 till 15. Food business operators and SHGs have been requested to attend the same.
