Will the appointment of Nagaland State’s first Lokayukta improve governance and accountability? How?

Some of those who voted YES had this to say:
• Of course! We have now the legal mechanism to check corruption in the State. Others (governance & accountability) will gradually add to the working of the mechanism by time itself. Wise people will accept with good faith.

• So long as no interference from any quarters and delivers it to the fullness what is meant to be; then only there is a fair chance of improvement. But At present Naga social life is full of doubt since corruption is deeply rooted, so it became as our culture, system and way of life. For example, if a person appeals for justice for the misappropriation in Education department, the person will excommunicated from the church, the village council will summon with 5-10 pigs/oxen etc. The unfortunate one may say goodbye to the cruel world. This is dark and harsh reality of Nagaland.

Some of those who voted NO had this to say:
• No. The system itself is corrupted from within. We need whistleblowers from the government to reveal the stench of corruption taking place. I don’t trust the kind of system that is there in Nagaland.

• Not at all. Governance and accountability will not come from Lokayukta. Governance and accountability has to come from the state machinery. Let’s not confuse it.

• No. How can a political appointee deliver justice? Nagas must finish the valiant first, and then Nagaland will become new Israel.

• No. Will be purchased by government.

• No. While it is good that a Lokayukta will be present in Nagaland, the decades of systemic corruption comes right from the top. Unless the cleansing is from the top there will be no change.

Some of those who voted OTHERS had this to say:
• Unless the public is educated about Lokayukta and the government is sincere, what’s the use? It will go into dustbin as everything else.

• There has been a lot of hue and cry demanding for Lokayukta in our state. But this will not solve anything. Corruption is not only in our Nagaland, it exists in India. Corruption will decrease in Nagaland when corruption reduces in India. This is the hard reality.

• Hopefully. I pray that it works smoothly and independently as it should be.
