Peren, February 1 (MExN): 13 Women SHG members were trained on how to stitch cloth pads in a 3-day workshop in Jalukie, Nagaland at the Community Learning Business Resource Centre (CLBRC) recently. It was conducted by RuTAG (IIT Madras) and Ecco Femme.
Cloth pads are sanitary napkins that can be re-used at least 75 times, made with soft, absorbent cotton flannel and a leak proof layer and wing. The pads are a hygienic, healthy and eco-friendly alternative to plastic disposable sanitary napkins (DSN) which are estimated to take 500-800 years to decompose.
A press release from Amos Newme, District Co. L&RM, NERLP-Peren, stated this novel concept was brought together by North East Rural Livelihood Project, Ministry of DoNER, GoI, RuTAG (IIT Madras) and Eco Femme.
The workshop also provided a holistic approach to menstruation; sharing menstrual experiences, learning about menstruation, menstrual hygiene, cycle tracking and assessing different products that are available for their health, environmental and financial impact.
Stitched by women SHG members, the pads will provide livelihood to the tailors as well as a sustainable product available to those who want to switch to a healthy and green period. The pads will be branded Tadi Pads.
