The Assam unit of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Monday termed the "threat" of disconnecting electricity supply to consumers who fail to create property holding numbers link that with the electricity consumer number and clear the property tax dues by December 31 as illegal. Neither the Electricity Act nor the Electricity Supply Code and Regulations on related matters have such provisions, the AAP added. GMC Mayor Mrigen Sarania had on December 2 while announcing the launch of a website for selfgeneration of property holding numbers linking that with electricity consumer number and paying the tax dues set the January 31 deadline for the city residents. Joint State Coordinator Jitul Deka said at a press meet here "it is an authoritarian decision the gmc is harassing the city dwellers in the name of recovering unpaid property taxes". Stating that AAP is in favour of people being made to pay property tax, he said "but electricity disconnection on grounds of not linking the holding number and electricity consumer number and subsequently paying the dues has not been mentioned anywhere in the Electricity Act 2003 and the Gazette Notification on Electricity Supply Code and Related Matters Regulations".
