The upcoming Mizoram elections will see 16 female candidates out of a total of 174. The BJP was forced to drop one woman candidate due to pressure from a student body. In the last election, there were 18 women nominees. The ruling MNF, ZPM, and Congress have two women candidates each. The Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee refused to bow down to pressure and announced that one of their women candidates, who married a local Gorkha, will contest. There are also seven women candidates running as Independents. Mizoram is a patriarchal society with limited representation for women in politics and the church.
