The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, has stated that state government employees will need to obtain prior permission for a second marriage, even if their religion permits it. However, he clarified that the government is not obligated to grant permission. The state government recently issued an order prohibiting employees from marrying someone else while their spouse is still alive, with potential penalties for bigamy. The enforcement of this rule aims to resolve disputes over pension claims by multiple wives of deceased employees. Sarma emphasized that this rule was established in 1965, before the current BJP-led government came to power.
