Commercialisation of Education

RK Sharma

Midland | Dimapur

Mushrooming of so called English, medium private school in Dimapur. Exorbitant admission and monthly fees if the school catches the eyes of the public, mainly – for its outward show as well as maintain gradual increase in enrolment of the students. Simultaneously, it starts exhibiting its superiority, claiming special category state as it starts screening procedures during admission of students.

A long queue of admission is generally seen in nursery classes- a separate decorative and favulous wing for the kids in order to entice the kids and parents as well. A bulky school bag, numerous subject books and exercise copies with printed school names, covers, calendar, uniform (2 sets), belt, socks etc. are sold lavishly. The admission of kids for nursery is a big challenge for parents and plight of common man. Needless to mention, many parents feel bitter and indignant but individually lacks courage to complain on the apprehension of untoward happening. It appears apparently that few schools take the undue privilege of selling pile of books at random without thinking soberly whether the books recommended/approved will be useful to the taught in teaching, learning and meeting the needs of kids as exclusively compiled for the age group of 4-6 years.

Even some of the books enlisted below, prescribed as text-books for class 1 in a well-known school of Dimapur, have been prepared from the school itself. Xerox copying process applied, papers binded together in the format of books and charging abnormal high prices. There is neither cover page with author’s name nor publisher’s name.

  1. Mathematics: Part I and Part III, containing 64 to 73 pages only, Price Rs. 200/- and Rs. 230/- respectively .
  2. Speaking and Listening: Not at all effacious for Class-1 Kids 2parts – Part I Rs. 270/- and Part II Rs. 180/-
  3. Tables workbook : Rs. 320/-
  4. A thin table book containing 12 pages only, Price Rs. 100/-
On the pretext of imparting good and quality education the school intrepidly collect a hefty bill from each pupil which is a matter of dismay and disdain.
