‘News reporting-purposeful job’

Keduovilie Linyü

The objective of news reporting in development is- conveying information on various aspects of development programme and feedback, kindling aspiration that are in keeping with the people’s socio-economic and cultural, direction, providing content and motivation for planned change. Its role is perceived as creating a purposive wave-length between the development planners, policy-makers and administration on the one hand and the people on the other.

Today, we find newspapers with their pages filled with reports of murders, brutality, corruption and crime and know that there is something very wrong with society and such development-oriented communication constitute a negligible percentage of the total column space available in it. Those who have been manning the channels particularly, the print media are also found to be urban-bred with little contact with the rural areas and the masses. Most of them have little time left for attending to the vital aspects of filling development stories, much of their time as the situation now obtains is taken by publishing Government programme and attending to public relation work connected with VIP’s and other who are constantly on tours in the districts.

In dealing with our daily and weekly newspapers, we find reports of accident, killing and robbery etc. which are not news: they are old and has no meaning for progress and education. We also find developmental news in small space in newspapers and the news of anti-social, killing, robbery, accident, strikes and agitation etc. in a larger space. Every newspaper sets out to meet the demands of its readers. It must do or perish, if the reader does not get what he wants from our newspaper he will go elsewhere. Demand exists in the form of sports, advertisement, educative articles, development, new discoveries and entertainment etc. Our newspapers are urban-biased and commercialism.

The life of a news reporter is not quite all the Taj Mahal by moonlight and gondolas on the Grand Canel. We regard their news reporting as a purposeful job. He must equip himself with current affairs and the past and present changed lives and situation of those places and people where he hopes to work. The readers wish that the reporter has the power to interpret in a vivid word and telling phrases: for his are the eyes through which the stay-at-home readers sees the world. A journalist must himself be something of an authority. Once he established his reputation, he will find his presence and valued opinion welcome to any kind of job when an occasion arises.
