New Assam DGP Singh stresses on forensics

The new dgp of Assam, GP Singh, said that there is tremendous scope for improvement in probes, especially with reference to forensic support. He said that district courts have convicted someone and the honourable Gauhati High Court has acquitted them for some other reason, and it is unfair to say that the police investigations were completely ineffectual. He added that for the improvement in investigations, we have had multiple discussions with the state government, the chief minister has also personally taken an interest in it, and consultants have been appointed renowned former IPS officers with expertise in the field of forensics. He said that the Assam Police are preparing a blueprint and architecture for the growth of forensics in Assam, and he is hopeful that over the period of next few years, with the support of the government and an improvement in forensics infrastructure, we would be in a position to file better charge sheets and to fight out through prosecution in a much better way.

Jobs for families of 72 Assam cops killed by rebels

The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, on Saturday distributed job letters to over 1200 persons in various government departments, including family members of 72 policemen who were killed by militants while on duty. The chief minister said the government is working overtime to ensure jobs for families of every slain police personnel. Between 1996 and 2005, almost all the communities of the state had an armed outfit. The biggest challenge was from the Ulfa and Bodo groups, and many police personnel lost their lives initially. Their families would receive government jobs on compassionate grounds, but the practice was later discontinued and an ex gratia payment was given to their nearest family member. Today, family members of 72 policemen have been given appointment letters. The chief minister exhorted nurses under the Health and Family Welfare Department who got their appointment letters on the occasion to serve with a smile and dedication.

Manik Sarkar not to contest Tripura assembly election

Manik Sarkar, a Communist Party of India (Marxist) stalwart and four-time former chief minister of Tripura, will not contest the upcoming assembly election. The left front's list of candidates issued on Wednesday states that Sarkar and his seven other sitting MLAs "have been relieved this time." Five years ago, Sarkar met his biggest defeat at the hands of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He was denied a fifth straight term as the chief minister of the state and his party was pushed out of governance after 25 years on the trot. Sarkar represented Dhaneswar constituency in Sipajhala district, which is a small semiurban centre about 65 km west of the capital, Agartala. Sarkar has been winning this seat since 1998, when he became the chief minister for the first time. A commerce graduate from Maharaja Bir Bikram College, Agartala, Sarkar became a member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) when he was 19 and won his first election in 1980, when he was elected as an MLA from Agartala constituency. He was reelected to the assembly but from Krishnanagar, became the state finance minister.

Mother, son ‘trafficked’ from Guwahati, traced in Rajasthan

A 22-year-old woman and her three-year-old child were suspected to have been trafficked to Rajasthan's Churu district on Monday. They had gone missing from Guwahati's Satgaon area on January 16. Guwahati Police Commissioner Diganta Barah said the woman and her child have been rescued with the help of the Rajasthan Police and will soon be brought back to Guwahati to reunite with their family. A missing complaint was lodged at the Satgaon Police Station by the woman's family members a couple of days later. The woman's mother informed the police that she had called from Delhi Police said "the woman had told her mother that someone took her to Delhi and urged her to rescue both of them immediately. An FIR was lodged and investigation was started however verification of the mobile number showed that the last location was near Clock Tower Road at Sardarshahar in Churu district of Rajasthan." Police said later police found the number switched off. The city police wrote to the Rajasthan Police seeking their cooperation regarding the case. Then both the mother and child were rescued by the Rajasthan Police and are currently in their custody. A city police team will leave for Rajasthan soon

Assam cracks down on men who have married under-14 girls

The Assam Cabinet on Monday directed the state police to launch a crackdown on men who have married girls below the age of 14 and arrest them under the Pocso Act while those who have married girls in the 14 to 18 age group will be arrested under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act 2006. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said more than one lakh girls in the state were married before coming of age according to rough estimates citing the National Family Health Survey 5 201920 report. Sarma said the number of child marriages in Assam is on the rise and that previous governments did not pay attention to the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act 2006 to prevent child marriages in the state. He added that as the previous governments did not pay attention to the act, Assam's infant mortality and maternal mortality rates continue to remain among the highest in the country. Sarma said he hopes to have Assam completely free of child marriages in five years.

Ahom ‘moidams’ India’s sole nomination for Unesco heritage tag

The mound burial system of the royals of the Ahom dynasty in Assam's Choraideo district can be likened to the royal tombs of ancient China and the pyramids of the Egyptians Pharaohs. The system has been finalised as India's sole nomination for consideration as Unesco World Heritage Site for the year 2023-24. The dossier states that with the shift of the Ahom capital south and eastwards, "moidams have been seen in different parts of northern Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, northern Burma, southern China and northeast India." However, the "cluster of moidams in Choraideo distinguishes itself in scale concentration and being located in the most sacred land of the Taiahoms." Snap all ties with political entities: ENSF to its units

The Eastern Nagaland Students' Federation (ENFSF) has directed all its units holding any designated post in any political entity to resign from the political entity and affiliation at the earliest. This is in accordance with a resolution passed during an emergency meeting last December. The ENFSF wants a separate state carved out of Nagaland's six eastern districts - Mon, Kiphire, Longleng, Tuensang, Shamator, and Noklak. Senior-most babus must take CM’s permission for leave: Assam govt

The Guwahati government has revised rules of leave for the state's senior bureaucrats, requiring them to obtain permission from the chief minister before leaving for any visit outside of the state. This new rule is for all officers from the rank of commissioner and secretary and above, and the state's most senior secretary. It was issued last Saturday during Bhogali Bihu, after many senior bureaucrats were found absent from important meetings. The state's personnel department's office memorandum states "it is observed that on some occasions senior officers of government of Assam are not available in the headquarters and hence were not present in important meetings etc." The office memorandum added "henceforth all officers in the rank of commissioner and secretary and above and the seniormost secretary of a department in government of Assam will obtain prior permission of hon'ble chief minister of Assam before leaving headquarters for any visit outside the state." Earlier, they did not have to obtain any permission for leaving headquarters for private visits within the state but had to inform their heads or the chief secretary. Last year, the government made it mandatory for all its employees to seek permission from the deputy commissioner of their district of posting before leaving the district. 50% drop in crimes against women last year, says DGP

The DGP of Assam, Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, spoke about the decrease in crime rates in the state of Assam. He said that this was due to various measures that the Assam Police had taken, such as cracking down on crime syndicates, increasing visibility and identification of hotspots, and increasing the percentage of filing chargesheets. Additionally, crimes against women decreased by 50 last year, while crimes against children decreased by 18. The Assam Police are also focusing on using technology and forensics to improve their investigations.

Shoppers flock to markets to buy ready-made mejis

The Assamese people in Guwahati are getting ready to celebrate the festival of Bhogali or Magh Bihu on Saturday. This festival is celebrated on the first day of the month of Magh in mid-January and is one of the most popular festivals in Assam. The main celebration of this festival is the burning of a conical structure called a Meji. This tradition is still followed religiously in rural areas of Assam, but in Guwahati it is difficult to find the raw materials to make a Meji, so people often buy readymade ones. Khanaparasix mile area is buzzing with shoppers where a bihu market has been set up. Mrinal Baishya, a shopkeeper from Rangia in Kamrup who has come to sell Mejis, says that the price of a small Meji is around Rs 200, while the larger ones cost around Rs 3000. He says that the price is justified because the materials needed to make a Meji, including transportation costs, were all brought from other parts of the state. A resident of Hatigaon area, Akhim Deka, says that he is not able to go to his hometown to celebrate Bhogali, but that does not mean that
