The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, on Saturday distributed job letters to over 1200 persons in various government departments, including family members of 72 policemen who were killed by militants while on duty. The chief minister said the government is working overtime to ensure jobs for families of every slain police personnel. Between 1996 and 2005, almost all the communities of the state had an armed outfit. The biggest challenge was from the Ulfa and Bodo groups, and many police personnel lost their lives initially. Their families would receive government jobs on compassionate grounds, but the practice was later discontinued and an ex gratia payment was given to their nearest family member. Today, family members of 72 policemen have been given appointment letters. The chief minister exhorted nurses under the Health and Family Welfare Department who got their appointment letters on the occasion to serve with a smile and dedication.
