Rickshaws fitted with motors banned on Guwahati roads

The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has banned the use of rickshaws fitted with motors in the city due to safety concerns for commuters. The civic body had given a week to rickshaw pullers to remove such motors, and warned of strict action, including seizure of the rickshaws if they did not comply. Rickshaws are categorized as slowmoving vehicles, but those fitted with motors naturally run faster than the regular ones, posing a risk of accidents. The GMC commissioner, Megha Nidhi Dahal, stated, "It has been found that there are many rickshaws which are plying on the guwahati city roads retrofitted with electric motors, it is unsafe for the commuters, as per the decision of the Mayor-in-Council. The usage of the same is to be discontinued with immediate effect." The rickshaw pullers have opposed the GMC order, and asked the civic body what's the harm if they earn a little more by covering more distance in a short span of time using such motors.
