Manik Sarkar, a Communist Party of India (Marxist) stalwart and four-time former chief minister of Tripura, will not contest the upcoming assembly election. The left front's list of candidates issued on Wednesday states that Sarkar and his seven other sitting MLAs "have been relieved this time." Five years ago, Sarkar met his biggest defeat at the hands of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He was denied a fifth straight term as the chief minister of the state and his party was pushed out of governance after 25 years on the trot. Sarkar represented Dhaneswar constituency in Sipajhala district, which is a small semiurban centre about 65 km west of the capital, Agartala. Sarkar has been winning this seat since 1998, when he became the chief minister for the first time. A commerce graduate from Maharaja Bir Bikram College, Agartala, Sarkar became a member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) when he was 19 and won his first election in 1980, when he was elected as an MLA from Agartala constituency. He was reelected to the assembly but from Krishnanagar, became the state finance minister.
