Assam CM urges civil society to put ‘moral pressure’ on Ulfa-I chief

The chief minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, has appealed to public organizations and civil society groups to put "moral pressure" on the antitalk faction of the Ulfa Ulfaindependent led by Commander In-Charge Paresh Baruah to drop the demand of sovereignty from their list of demands and come forward for talks. Sarma said that Baruah's adamant stance on making independence the prime agenda of talks and his own oath of keeping India's sovereignty intact are two irreconcilable differences "I cannot remain the CM if I break my oath of upholding the country's sovereignty, while Baruah also does not want to step back from his stand on independence but if the people of Assam put moral pressure on him and appeal to him to drop the demand of sovereign Assam, his mindset might change." Sarma requested intellectuals and student organizations to take the lead in building public opinion to convince the elusive Ulfa Independent leader that the people of Assam won't call him a betrayer if he joins the dialogue process with the government, shunning the sovereignty issue.
